The Benefits of Hiring Apprentices through a Group Training Organisation

Group Training Organisations (GTOs) are transforming workforce development by offering a flexible and supportive way for businesses to hire apprentices.

As small to medium-size businesses face worker shortages and seek better retention rates, more are turning to GTOs for practical solutions. With increased state government investment, GTOs are becoming a valuable resource for building a skilled workforce.

NextGen Skills (formerly MPA Skills) has been specialising in training apprentice painters and plumbers for over 40 years in Perth. Painting and plumbing and gas apprenticeships are in high demand, driven by the increasing need for skilled tradespeople in the construction and maintenance sectors.

Our goal is to develop apprentices into competent and confident tradespeople who are well-prepared to support Western Australia’s construction industry. By investing in apprentice training, we ensure a bright and sustainable future for both the trades and the businesses that depend on them.

Why become a host employer?

At NextGen Skills, we use the Group Training model, where we hire apprentices and place them with host employers. This setup allows us to provide flexible, reliable workforce solutions while supporting both businesses and apprentices. By hiring an apprentice through a GTO, you save time and money, plus gain access to financial incentives that help cover the costs of training new talent.

Key Benefits for Host Employers:

No Sick Pay: Host employers aren’t responsible for covering sick pay, reducing financial strain and ensuring smooth operations during an apprentice’s illness.

No Training Costs: NextGen Skills covers all training expenses, allowing employers to focus on their business without the burden of additional training costs.

No Holiday Pay: Holiday pay is managed by NextGen Skills, simplifying financial planning and ensuring no unexpected costs during holiday periods.

No PPE Costs: We provide all necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), ensuring apprentices are safely equipped and reducing costs for host employers.

No Paperwork: We handle all employment contracts and compliance documentation, freeing up time for employers to focus on their core business.

Pastoral Support: We offer support and advice to apprentices, ensuring they stay motivated and engaged, which leads to higher retention and better outcomes.

Wages & Superannuation: NextGen Skills takes care of wages and superannuation payments, ensuring legal compliance and fair compensation.

Insurance & Workers’ Compensation: We manage all insurance and workers’ compensation, protecting both apprentices and employers in case of workplace incidents.

WHS Training & Support: We provide workplace health and safety training, along with necessary support and paperwork, to ensure a safe working environment for apprentices.

Funding Available for Host Employers

The WA State Government has expanded the GTO Wage Subsidy Program to support apprenticeship programs. Recognising their importance and creating 175 new places for apprentices employed through GTOs like MPA Skills and NextGen Skills.

By hosting apprentices through a GTO, your business could receive wage subsidies of up to $100,000 over the apprenticeship term, with amounts varying by trade and course length. This program supports SMEs working on:

  • Government building and construction projects
  • Non-government residential construction projects in WA

Additionally, if you own a small or medium business with less than 199 staff, you may be eligible for up to $5,000 towards the cost of hiring an apprentice under the Australian Government’s GTO Reimbursement Program.

This program, from the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations, aims to help small businesses by reimbursing some of the costs of apprenticeship services.
